The ONLY Degreed Mechanical and Truck/Automotive Engineers on the net with 25 years experience specializing in engine, powertrain/chassis engineering, performance and synthetic motor oil lubrication and filtration.

 Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel Owners

Brought to you by highly experienced Truck and Automotive Engineers and Lubrication Specialists. We have 25 years experience engineering and testing cars, trucks, engines, chassis components and systems, powertains and lubricants and we will put our extensive knowledge to use for you.

We are also longstanding Professional Grade members of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). This prestigious position is ONLY granted to degreed engineers with documented work experience in the automotive engineering industry.

We have packed this website with useful information that will help you to make an informed decision regarding your choice of lubrication and filtration products for your vehicles and equipment.

You've spent your hard earned money on the Cummins Turbo Diesel option now don't you think you owe it to yourself to use the very best oil in it?  And don't let your local dealership service center tell you that you you have to use their brand of oil to "maintain your warranty". That is a false statement by the dealership, yet it goes on day in and day out. We constantly receive calls from customers that were told this by their servicing dealership. This practice is not authorized or condoned by the auto manufacturers, but the fact is it still goes on.

How a servicing dealership can essentially tell a customer that they have to use a lower quality oil than AMSOIL to "maintain their warranty" is not only wrong but it is also illegal unless they provide it free of charge. There are Federal laws that protect you against this.  Please read our Warranty Laws You Need to Know section of this website to learn more or send us an email.

Take a look at the varnish deposits in this picture below. These are the results of a severe high temperature deposit test.  The one at the far right is AMSOIL Synthetic 15W-40 Diesel oil and the others are major brand petroleum diesel oils. (left to right: Chevron Delo 400, Cummins Premium Blue, Shell Rotella T, AMSOIL 15W-40). The test clearly shows that AMSOIL keeps engines cleaner longer than other major brand diesel oils do. Which oil would you rather have protecting your engine?

Synthetic Oil Proven to Prevent Turbocharger Bearing Seizure

One of the many specific areas on a turbocharged engine, such as the Cummins Turbo Diesel, which can clearly benefit from the use of synthetic oil is the turbocharger.  When a turbocharged engine is shut off immediately after a high speed run, "heat soak" occurs from the engine, and it considerably increases the temperature in the turbocharger.  Over a period of time this can lead to deposits that can block the oil flow to the turbocharger bearings, leading to turbocharger seizure.  Synthetic engine oils that are inherently more thermally stable than petroleum engine oils have been shown to keep turbochargers considerably cleaner than petroleum engine oils.  A poor petroleum oil will give turbocharger seizure, caused by blocked oilways, in under 100 hours of a severe "heat soak" test cycle.  A good petroleum oil will survive for 100 hours but with considerable deposits and incipient blocking. A good synthetic oil will maintain the turbocharger in almost "as fitted" condition.  Read on to learn the many more ways in which your Cummins Turbo Diesel can benefit from synthetic oil.

Current recommended practice is to change your oil every 3000-5000 miles with petroleum based oil as well as with some other brands of synthetic oils. This is  unnecessary with the AMSOIL technology that is available today, and has been available since 1972. The auto companies know about AMSOIL but do not promote it because it is often perceived that it can potentially cause them lost profits in service work, parts sales, quick lube oil changes and on a long term basis, regular repeat vehicle sales since engines, transmissions and differentials have been proven to last longer with AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants. Several dealerships we have visited stated that they like to keep customers coming in for oil changes regularly so they can look the vehicle over and possibly find other components that may be in need of service.

The "3000-5000 mile oil change" is, in our opinion and experience, completely unnecessary, especially with synthetic oil and superior filtration products.  Many of the same companies that continue to recommend the "3000 mile oil change" in the U.S. currently manufacture and/or recommend, and have for many years, extended drain intervals using synthetic oil in Europe for both gasoline and diesel fueled vehicles.

In addition, many auto and equipment companies have tested AMSOIL and know how good it is and many OEM Automotive Engineers we work with even use it in their own vehicles but we believe they will not use it in production for "political reasons". In fact, we first learned about AMSOIL many years ago in the dynamometer  laboratory when it was determined that a major OEM factory race team uses AMSOIL, yet advertises another manufacturer's brand of oil under a sponsorship program.

It is our opinion that oil companies need to sell large volumes of oil and auto companies want your engine and powertrain to have somewhat of a finite life. Enough life so that you are a very satisfied and happy customer and will come back and buy another one yet not so long that you won't need to buy another vehicle for a long time.  Petroleum oil appears to accomplish both objectives. For the last 34 years, AMSOIL has been proven by hundreds of of millions of miles of over the road testing as well as industry standard laboratory ASTM testing to allow vehicles and equipment to perform better and last longer than vehicles using petroleum oil.

The fact is that if every vehicle in the U.S. used AMSOIL that oil usage and waste oil would be reduced by over 80%!  Just imagine the money saved and the positive environmental benefits, not to mention significantly improved wear protection provided by AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants. Plus the fuel savings alone would amount to 3.66 billion gallons of fuel yearly and this is based on 1998 data, the last year Domestic Fuel Consumption data is available from the government. Now, with those hard facts in-hand I find it hard to believe the auto companies are not taking action to go100% synthetic on all lubricants in production vehicles.

I have an article of an AMSOIL user with 731,000 miles on his 1993 Ford Aerostar on the original engine and transmission. He was using AMSOIL from the beginning. This type of mileage is not uncommon when using AMSOIL synthetic lubricants.  Now, what do you think would happen it everybody used AMSOIL and got that much mileage on their vehicles? The auto companies like to hear reports of stuff like this on a small time basis but not on a large scale as it would have major negative economic implications.

Nobody in the business of selling 3000-5000 mile petroleum oil changes and repairing vehicles is going to tell you how to extend your drain intervals using AMSOIL technology and drastically reduce the rate of internal wear and it has been our experience that they know very little, if anything, about the technical and engineering aspects of lubrication, filtration and oil analysis science.

Simply changing your oil more often with petroleum oil will not give you all the benefits that AMSOIL offers:  You will not get improved fuel economy, you will not get reduced engine wear, you will not get reduced operating temperatures, you will not get extended drain intervals and you will not save money in the long run.  Please, allow us to show you a better way. We are here to help you. You have everything to gain and absolutely nothing to lose!

AMSOIL has been in business since 1972 and was the first company in the world to develop an API (Automotive Petroleum Institute) rated synthetic lubricant for automotive applications.   They coined the phrase "extended drain intervals" 30 years ago and have been on the leading edge of technology and innovation ever since then.  We have many satisfied customers using AMSOIL products in both their commercial, trucking, fleet as well as personal, family and recreational vehicles. We hope you will allow us to show you a proven better way.  We are here to help you and are at your service to assist you in your advanced technology lubrication and filtration needs.

Specifically for the Cummins Turbo Diesel AMSOIL engineers and manufactures a 15W-40 Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel Oil  (as well as Series 3000 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Synthetic) that when used in conjunction with AMSOIL Absolute Efficiency EaO-80 engine oil filter will allow you to travel 25,000 miles between filter changes and approximately 25,000 miles between oil changes. If you use oil analysis you can usually go longer than 25,000 miles on the oil.  Other AMSOIL benefits include reduced sludge and deposit formation, extreme temperature protection, improved fuel efficiency and rust and corrosion prevention and it does not void any new vehicle warranty. AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants meet and exceed all API rated and Dodge specifications

The other option is to install an AMSOIL Dual Remote By-Pass Filtration System or single by-pass system.  With this system you only change your oil when oil analysis indicates.  The AMSOIL Ea full flow filter is changed at 25,000 mile intervals and the by-pass filter is changed at approximately 25,000 miles for normal duty service.   The AMSOIL 15W-40 Synthetic Heavy Duty Oil  or the Series 3000 5W-30 HDD does not break down like conventional petroleum based motor oils, is much more shear stable and does not have the waxes, paraffins and by-products that come out of crude oil that is pumped from the earth.

The by-pass filter removes the particles that cause wear in your engine down to less than one micron (a micron equals 0.001 mm) and keeps the engine oil analytically clean so you do not need to change your oil for a long time, while still getting far better protection than someone that changes their oil every 3000 miles. We are experienced at installing these units and can provide you with exact installation instructions, tips, bracket prints and photographs.

The Performance Oil Technology Power Stroke Diesel vehicle #3 had over 87,000 miles without an oil change using AMSOIL 15W-40 Synthetic Diesel Oil ( and AMSOIL By-Pass oil filtration) prior to changing to the AMSOIL Series 3000 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil.  Laboratory oil chemical analysis every 15-20,000 miles indicated the oil was perfectly suitable for continued service. In addition, the AMSOIL By-Pass filter will also remove up to a pint of water from your vehicle's lubrication system and also remove soot, which is especially important in a diesel engine.  Without this the water and soot promotes rust, corrosion and rapid wear. Internal engine heat also creates acids which also wear the engine components.  The water and acids build and continue to work destroying your engine even after engine shutdown.

Oil analysis provides a big return for your small investment by extending equipment life by preventing premature component failure, reducing maintenance costs by eliminating unnecessary component changes and a decrease in downtime due to premature scheduled maintenance as well enabling calculation of optimum drain intervals that will reduce lubricant costs and assure maximum equipment protection.

Your average regular full flow engine oil filter will only remove wear particles down to the 20-25 micron range.  The filter cannot remove finer particles because the oil must be filtered quickly while removing most of the particles present in the oil, except the particles below the 20 micron range.  A study completed by Federal Mogul Corp. analyzing over 7000 main and connecting rod bearings concluded that 60% of all engine wear occurs in the 5-20 micron range.  This is why no matter how much you change your current full flow oil and filter, regardless of brand, that you still are not removing the particles that cause the greatest wear in your engine.

If you choose not to install the Dual Remote by-pass filtration system then the AMSOIL Ea Oil Filter would be of a significant benefit to the long term durability of your engine as well as allowing for 25,000 miles of service on the filter and 25,000 miles/1-year on the oil.

Ea Oil Filters feature advanced full synthetic nanofiber technology, making them the highest efficiency filters that are available for the auto/light truck market. They have an absolute efficiency rating of 98.7% at 15 microns and 50% at 7 microns.

When you reach 25,000 miles you can either change the oil and filter or take an oil sample from the dipstick tube using an AMSOIL sampling pump and send it into Oil Analyzer's Inc. using a pre-paid kit.  Oil analysis will indicate the exact condition of the oil and whether it is suitable for continued service as well as determining if there are any other engine components or wear items that you need to be concerned with.

AMSOIL has a complete line of synthetic oils, greases, transmission fluids, gear lubes, Two-Stage foam air filters, by-pass and full flow filters and filtration systems designed to extend the life of your vehicles and equipment and save you time and money.  In addition we also offer a preferred customer wholesale purchase option, retail purchase option or commercial account purchase option for businesses.  We also offer a Dealership Option for anyone interested in becoming an AMSOIL Dealer and/or purchasing products at wholesale cost.

AMSOIL Official Oil of the Diesel Power Challenge
The Diesel Power Challenge is the creation of Diesel Power Magazine and the Primedia Truck Group.  This was the third year of the Diesel Power Challenge, a grueling two-day event that tests the mettle of the toughest street legal turbo diesel trucks. The event in Utah will result in 40 pages of magazine coverage later this year, along with a one hour TV program to be aired nationally.

This year nine pickups arrived for the competition, all maxed-out turbodiesels.  All of the trucks, selected by the readers of Diesel Power Magazine, are put through rigorous testing for two days.  The tests include a 1/4 mile drag-strip run, 1/8 mile drag while pulling a 10,000 lb trailer, sled-pull for distance, chassis dynamometer pulls testing horsepower and torque and a 100 mile drive to see which turbodiesel has the best fuel economy on the road.

The growing popularity of diesel vehicles in the United States makes events like the Diesel Power Challenge an unrivaled opportunity to put AMSOIL products to the test in the most severe operating conditions.

Dealer's Truck Draws New Customers

"THIS TRUCK REQUIRES NO OIL CHANGE."

That's what people see on the streets of Coopersburg, Pa., when AMSOIL Dealer Herb Lansberg drives by in his 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Turbo Diesel.

The sign is emblazoned on his tailgate; AMSOIL logos and contact numbers for Lansberg complete the truck's design.

"It makes the phone ring," Lansberg said. "It's really a great feeling when I'm sitting at a red light and someone pulls up and yells over and asks if I'm a Dealer and asks for a business card. I've gotten new customers by simply pulling into a parking lot at a store and when I return to my truck there is someone waiting there to talk to me about AMSOIL. I would have to say my truck does a very good job of selling AMSOIL."

Lansberg changed his truck over to AMSOIL Series 3000 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil and installed the AMSOIL Dual Remote Filtration System at 3000 miles.

"I do oil analysis every four months, changing my oil filters when needed," he said. He also uses AMSOIL Automatic Transmission Fluid, AMSOIL gear lube in the rear end, AMSOIL Antifreeze and Coolant in the cooling system. Lansberg also uses AMSOIL Diesel Fuel Modifier along with AMSOIL Cetane Boost.

"First thing I noticed was my engine ran 10 degrees cooler," he said. "My transmission ran about 20 degrees cooler. And I know my gears are running cooler. I have more than 30,000 miles on my Dodge Cummins without an oil change."

Lansberg works his regular job as a machine shop supervisor 10 hours a day and grows his AMSOIL business after work and on weekends.

"My wife, Tammy, helps me out with customers that stop in while I'm at work," he said.

He credits the signs on the truck, wearing AMSOIL clothing and word of mouth for much of his success. He also has a large "AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants" sign on the front of his house that he spot lights at night.

On one occasion he was in a tractor supply store wearing an AMSOIL shirt and it prompted another customer there to ask Lansberg if he sold diesel oil. Lansberg said he had some on hand at home.

"He followed me home and purchased the Series 3000 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil and a Super Duty Oil Filter for his GMC Diesel van that he runs freight in more than 7,000 miles a month," Lansberg said. "Now he stops every two or three months for oil and air filters."

Since he started his AMSOIL business about two years ago, Lansberg has seen steady growth. He added a website and a toll-free number to his cell phone to handle customer calls.

"The Dealers and Preferred Customers and some of my accounts came from my website at www.syntheticoilspecialties.com," he said.

He will begin displaying AMSOIL products at car shows this spring.

"I have some customers who go the full distance of the drain intervals and some who just like to change earlier," he said. "They like knowing they're protecting their investment with the very best synthetic motor oil on the market.

"I enjoy meeting new people all the time and seeing the expression on their faces when I explain to them what AMSOIL synthetic lubricants are capable of doing."

AMSOIL QUIETS FORD 6.0 TURBO ENGINE

When Art Schwartz, Deltona, Fla., bought a Ford dually F350 Super Duty 6.0L turbo diesel with fourwheel drive, he found that the engine would shake when idling.

“Sometimes it was right away, and sometimes it was after a minute or so,” Schwartz said. “I had the truck in for the latest computer updates for the engine and transmission but that never did help.”

Schwartz said he had used Shell Rotella T 15W-40 diesel oil, but he read so much about AMSOIL products he decided to give AMSOIL Synthetic 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine Oil a try. Before long, Schwartz was sitting in the truck at idle and realized the engine was not shaking. He asked himself,
“How can that be? All I did was change the oil and put in a new AMSOIL EAO-88 oil filter.”

To get some answers, he went to his mechanic who has worked on diesel engines for more than 20 years. Schwartz said the mechanic explained that engines often perform and idle better with one oil over another. The mechanic was familiar with the truck, so he took it for a test drive. The mechanic told Schwartz the engine had the biggest reduction in engine surging he ever noticed.

“Now, I am the biggest skeptic when it comes to things like this, but it did exactly what I said it did and I could not believe it,” Schwartz said. “I am now impressed with AMSOIL and will never use anything else.”

Ford Powerstroke Diesel Customer Testimonial - Ken Pugh

This is my seventh car/truck that used AMSOIL products.

I purchased my first diesel on March 11, 2001. The Ford Excursion had 4,727 miles on April 21, 2001 when the following fluids were changed to AMSOIL.

  • Engine changed to HDD Series 3000 5W-30
  • Transmission and transfer case changed to ATF
  • Rear Differential changed to Series 2000 SAE 75W - 140
  • Front Differential changed to SAE 80W-90
  • BK-16 By-Pass oil filter added to truck

This SUV engine has a 100,000 mile warranty from Ford. The engine oil has been analyzed every 10,000 miles since it was new and now has more than 98,000 miles on one oil change using the BK 16 By-pass filter system, without any problems.

In the last year, I have traveled over 40,000 trouble free miles, thanks to AMSOIL, and have towed a 8 1/2 X 34 foot travel trailer 10,000 miles during this time period.

On February 2, 2004, the PSD completed its first 100,000 miles looking forward to second 100,000. The engine does not have any white, blue or black smoke and no engine or transmission repairs in the first 100,000 miles.-Ken Pugh

AMSOIL Boosts Bottom Line for Grain Hauler

Burnell Keller of Castroville, Texas hauls a lot of corn. Saving downtime and maintenance costs boost his bottom line.

Since the 1960s, Keller Grain, Inc., at Castroville has bought high quality white and yellow corn from local farmers and trucked it to processing plants across the state of Texas. "These trucks put on about 12,000 miles a month," said Keller, the company's owner.

He was running Exxon XD3-30 motor oil in his Freightliner and changing it every 10,000 miles. He heard AMSOIL products could cut his operating and maintenance costs in half, provide better fuel economy, easier starts and extended oil drains at least three times longer than he was getting.

"We were fixing to extend the drain to 15,000 miles," Keller said. "But a sample of the Exxon motor oil analyzed at 10,000 miles came back saying the oil needed to be changed. I said, let's give AMSOIL a whirl."

After an engine flush, Keller installed AMSOIL 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine Oil in his Freightliner, with more than 400,000 miles on the engine.

"We did this procedure three times at a 15,000-mile analysis and filter change only," Keller said. "Each time the oil sample report came back saying the oil was good for continued use."

After the third round of analysis, the oil was changed. Keller plans to continue with 15,000-mile analysis and filter changes and to continue to use the same oil for an interval of 50,000 miles.

"That's about five times longer than before," Keller said. "It's very good. Keller Grain is now convinced that AMSOIL is a superior product and that anybody can save money using AMSOIL products."

"The Dealers and Preferred Customers and some of my accounts came from my website" he said.

From the President's Desk...

I was recently taking inventory of all the outstanding products we manufacture when it occurred to me that some of our best products are often the least promoted. Those would be our By-Pass Oil Filter Systems. That's when I decided to tell you a little more about these incredibly effective filters in my message this month and encourage you to install one on your vehicle.

Have you seen one of these beautiful oil filters? There's really nothing like them on the market today. The filter mounts are computer machined anodized aluminum and produced to aircraft tolerances, meaning they meet the most exacting fit and machining tolerances. Every part is of the highest quality, built to provide many years of trouble-free service. High flow porting, large diameter nuts and bolts with stainless steel washers for secure mounting under the hood, reinforced hoses with abrasion resistant covering, strong, easy connecting swivel hose-end fittings, this filter mount is built to last!

Our Spin-On By-Pass Filter itself is simply the best oil filter made. Where normal full flow filters take out the "nuts and bolts" in the crankcase (25-40 microns), our by-pass filter removes sub-micron particles down to one tenth of a micron. When you consider that most engine wear occurs from dirt particles in the 5 micron to 20 micron range, it's easy to understand why we say our filter eliminates the cause of most engine wear.

With the AMSOIL By-Pass Filter installed, motor oil is kept analytically clean and suitable for use over dramatically extended drain intervals. As a matter of fact, many drivers may never need to change oil again for as long as they own their vehicle! That may seem like a strong statement, but the fact is synthetic oil does not wear out, it just eventually becomes too contaminated for continued use. Keeping it analytically clean extends its life indefinitely.

Most of you are familiar with Haywood Gray's 409,000-mile drain interval using AMSOIL 15W-40 Diesel Oil and our By-Pass Oil Filter. After going twenty times the drain interval recommended for his Mack E7-400 diesel engine, his local Mack dealership disassembled his engine and had the parts examined for wear by a certified engine rater. The results were predictable as far as AMSOIL was concerned. Very light wear, if any. In fact, many of the parts including the piston pins showed no wear at all. All the parts could have been re-installed in the engine for continued use. That's after 409,000 miles on one oil change! How many people even drive their vehicles 409,000 miles? That's more miles than many vehicles get on them in a lifetime of use. So when we say never change oil again, for many drivers, that's exactly what we mean! And consider this was a diesel engine. Diesels inherently produce more combustion soot and solid contaminants for the oil to disperse and the filter to remove. In all likelihood, if this had been a gasoline engine, it could have been used much longer with similar results.

A few years ago, a state transportation department tested our By-Pass Filter in some of their school busses. The test results confirmed the fact that they would realize significant maintenance and labor savings by using our filter in their entire fleet. Today, they insist our By-Pass Filter be original equipment on all the new school busses they purchase. They now have 1,500 busses equipped with our filters and the number is growing as they add new busses. What a tremendous testimonial!

Our incredible oil filtration system is a product often overlooked by our Dealers. I have heard some say that most people don't keep their vehicle long enough to warrant using a by-pass oil filter. No matter how long you keep a vehicle, it is very convenient not having to change oil. And it adds value to a vehicle. I personally know of someone who had a waiting list of people wanting to buy his car because they knew how well he took care of it. That included his use of an AMSOIL By-Pass Oil Filter and our synthetic oil.

The AMSOIL By-Pass Oil Filters are designed to be easy to install and cost effective to use. All you have to do is look at one to realize the quality built into it. If I were an AMSOIL Dealer, I wouldn't own a vehicle without having one of these incredible filtration systems installed. Then I could speak from experience about how well they work and how cost effective they are to use.

Can you imagine the reaction you'll get when you look people in the eye and tell them you never change the oil in your vehicle? Most people won't believe you. But what a testimony it will be to the quality of AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil you sell and to the phenomenal filtering capability of your AMSOIL By-Pass Filtration System!

Sharing The Miles Together
Haywood Gray and His AMSOIL Legacy

It is no coincidence that the name Haywood "Woody" Gray holds a special significance in AMSOIL circles. Gray's story has been featured in dozens of publications including AMSOIL's Action News, Service Line, Direct Line, a small library of brochures and pamphlets and even video tapes documenting his experiences with AMSOIL extended drain intervals. His experiences stand as an example of AMSOIL quality and cost savings for all to see.

Way Back When The Old Stuff Was New

Haywood Gray began using AMSOIL Synthetic Heavy-Duty Diesel and Marine 15W-40 Motor Oil (AME) in the E9-400 V-8 engine of his first truck, a 1984 Mack, after the engine accumulated 45,000 miles. For 280,000 miles, Gray changed his oil at 40,000- to 60,000-mile intervals even though his oil analysis reports showed, without exception, that the oil was good for continued use. At 325,060 miles Gray increased his oil drain interval to 100,000 miles.

The engine was torn down at 600,000 miles when Gray decided to sell the truck. The cylinder liners, bearings, pistons, rings and oil pump, which were all treated to extended oil drain intervals with AMSOIL, were found to be in excellent condition.

Gray continued using AMSOIL AME in the engine of his new truck, a 1990 Mack with an E7-400 engine. He also determined that the new truck would also be the start of a new oil-draining program. He decided that instead of using his previous 100,000-mile oil change guidelines, he would base his oil drains on the findings of a used oil analysis program. He also installed an AMSOIL By-Pass Filtration system.

After 630,000 miles total and 409,000 miles without an oil change, the E7-400 engine was torn down by the local Mack dealership in December 1996 and its parts were examined by an engine rater from a major oil additive manufacturer.

What the team found was surprising to everyone except perhaps Haywood Gray.

The engine showed light to moderate wear throughout, just as an engine in similar service and lubricated with conventional petroleum oil changed at 20,000 mile intervals would show. In addition, according to the engine rater, the parts he examined - cylinder liners, pistons, rings, bearings, valve train components could have been put right back in the engine and would have continued to provide the good, dependable service they had provided all along. And all this after 409,000 miles without an oil change!

What's Woody doing now?

Gray now drives a 1999 Mack with an ET 460 engine, an Eaton 13 speed transmission and 386 Eaton rears. As soon as he bought the truck it was retrofitted with AMSOIL 75W90 Gear Lube and the engine changed over to his old favorite - AMSOIL Synthetic Heavy-Duty Diesel and Marine 15W-40 Motor Oil. He also had a BMK-12 ByPass Filtration system installed.

As of July 2003, Gray has over 330,000 miles on the engine, and has racked up 290,000 miles without an oil change. He has decided to change filters and take oil samples at 40,000-mile intervals. So far, the samples have shown that the oil has not needed to be changed. Soot levels have also remained well within the recommended Mack limits. The truck is greased with AMSOIL products every 40,000 miles when it is time for a filter change.

Gray likes to point out that his fuel mileage is a constant 7-mpg, while other truckers hauling under similar circumstances and with similar equipment average only 5.5 to 6 mpg. But he also knows that's just one of the many benefits AMSOIL has to offer.

How to Cut Costs as an Owner-Operator

Mike Geho (from Mertz, WV), an owner-operator of a 1997 Mack CH613 truck, says that he has always been looking for ways to operate his truck more efficiently. Geho, like most owner-operators, looks to get the lowest cost per mile when operating his truck, but he says that the best choices also offer long term benefits.

"Proper maintenance is essential to success in trucking," Geho said. "Smart truck owners use the very best maintenance practices to protect their equipment. And considering which oil to use is often a very important decision." Geho says that he prefers synthetics to conventional oils because of the many benefits such as a constant viscosity in high and low temperatures, low volatility and superior friction reduction for better fuel mileage.

But Geho believes that by-pass filtration combined with periodic oil analysis is an even greater way synthetics can save truckers money. "When I began investigating engine oils," Geho said, "my main focus was on extended drains. I have been driving over the road for the last nine years, and the last six as an owner-operator. I understand how valuable time can be. Naturally, saving time by operating with extended drain intervals appealed to me."

Geho took the time to compare many different diesel engine oils. He checked to see which could lower his cost per mile by increasing fuel economy and reducing time and money spent on maintenance and engine wear. After comparing many brands, Geho chose AMSOIL synthetic motor oil.

Geho has been using AMSOIL Series 3000 5W-30 Synthetic Diesel Engine Oil along with an AMSOIL Dual-Guard By-Pass Filtration System in his truck for three years. His truck had 176,000 miles on it when he began using synthetic oil. At that time he also installed his by-pass filtration unit.

"At the time I bought this truck," Geho said, "the company I am leased to bought a number of identical trucks for their fleet. All of these trucks have been operating under the same conditions (environment, type of hauling, distances traveled) since that time. The trucks also have a dash-mounted digital display indicating lifetime average fuel economy. To date, my tractor's average is 6.78 mpg and the company trucks range from 5.8 to 6.2 mpg. The difference between my 6.78 and the fleet average of 6.0 is over 11 percent. I attribute this significant savings to running AMSOIL motor oil in my truck, while the others in the company do not."

Geho changes his full-flow and by-pass filters on a regular basis, and he also samples his oil at 20,000-mile intervals to monitor the oil's condition. He started this maintenance practice at 176,000 miles and has not changed the oil in his engine since. His truck now has 412,000 miles on it, and 236,000 of those miles have been put on while running the original AMSOIL diesel engine oil. And Geho probably won't be changing the oil soon, because a recent analysis report from Oil Analyzers INC. reports that the oil is suitable for continued use.

Geho wants other owner-operators to know that this type of maintenance practice has many benefits. "Most operators could experience savings of at least two cents per mile," Geho said, 'which would be $2000 to $5000 per year. That's not including the savings in fuel and disposal costs of oil and filters. These are just some of the positive effects that using synthetics can have on the environment as well as your bottom line."
