A hypoid gear is a type of spiral bevel gear found in many axle differentials and used to transfer power to the axle shafts from the driveline. Hypoid gears engage the pinion under the centerline of the ring gear, which drops the driveshaft away from the vehicle’s underside.

Yes, you can mix full synthetic gear oil (like AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR and Long Life Gear Oil) with conventional and they are generally compatible with each other. However, mixing synthetic and regular gear lubes can shorten the oil's life expectancy and reduce performance, which is why AMSOIL does not recommend it nor support extended drain intervals where oils have been mixed.
