AMSOIL Severe Gear Lube also offers maximum performance and protection for hypoid gears. Hypoid gears are essentially spiral bevel gears, where the pinion engages below the centerline of the ring gear. This enables the driveshaft to sit lower beneath the vehicle. Hypoid gears are typically found in automotive rear axle differentials, especially in large trucks.

Yes, you can mix full synthetic gear oil (like AMSOIL SEVERE GEAR and Long Life Gear Oil) with conventional and they are generally compatible with each other. However, mixing synthetic and regular gear lubes can shorten the oil's life expectancy and reduce performance, which is why AMSOIL does not recommend it nor support extended drain intervals where oils have been mixed.
AMSOIL synthetic gear lubes and SEVERE GEAR Oils are limited-slip capable and do not typically require an additional friction-modifier additive. However, for applications that require additional limited-slip friction modifiers, we recommend adding AMSOIL Slip Lock. Slip Lock will help eliminate chatter in mechanically sound differentials.
